How do motion detection alerts work in surveillance station? Are the alerts generated by your camera's on-board algorithms and video is only sent to the NAS after an alert had been generated, or is the camera streaming video all the time and surveillance station is analyzing the feed for movement? I'd prefer the camera hosted detection instead of nas hosted detection because I dont have enough bandwidth to be streaming video from the cameras 24/7.

I dont know the full indepth workings of SS but for motion detection you can use the cameras onboard detection or use SS to do it, but the video stream is going to SS all the time anyway even if you arent recording 24/7. SS needs to know that the camera is there and working by getting the video stream, it doesnt sit silent until the camera tells it to start recording a motion detection.

Can the constant stream be a really low grade stream that kicks to HD once the camera detects an event?

That is a option yes, live stream can be set to "low quality" and on event detection it switches to something better. Do be aware though that its not easy getting the detection balance right, and this isnt just SS issue, or a camera issue, its a general problem in that lots of things can cause a motion detection eg change in sun light, reflections on car windows etc, i gave up long time ago using motion detection on outside cameras just too many false positives.
