Hi all,

I have a DS920+ on DSM 7.1, I only have one volume. I need to add more storage, but then need to swap a desktop 3TB Red Plus with my Synology 6TB Red Plus.

I wanna do:

1. Test the new 16TB ensuring it's all good before return date
2. Swap one 6TB out of my Synology, replace with a 3TB from desktop (adding more storage to desktop)

Current setup (SHR):
12TB - 6 TB - 6TB

TO (SHR):
12TB - 6TB - 16TB (NEW) - 3TB (old desktop drive)

What's the best way to do that to minimize data replication time, or risk of data loss.

Thanks!

With SHR, you will not be able to add a 3TB drive into this setup. The minimum size of the disk needs to me same or larger then the smallest drive in the current array, in your case 6TB.

So, 6TB drive or larger will be the only option.

If the existing drives are of different sizes, then the replacement drive must be equal to or larger than the largest existing drive. You must replace the smaller drives first to optimize the usage of storage pool capacity. For example, if your SHR storage pool consists of three drives of different sizes (i.e., 4 TB, 3 TB, and 2 TB), then the replacement drive must be at least 4 TB. Replace the 3 TB or 2 TB drives first.

Better option is: 12TB - 6 TB - 6TB > 12TB - 6TB - 6TB - 16TB

Thanks guys, so adding a 3TB ain't an option... will figure something else out then.

Ok guys - A NEW QUESTION!

How can I REMOVE A DRIVE from storage pool, WITHOUT impacting data?!

I got the 16TB, but it's TOO LOUD! I wanna RETURN IT, but from what I understand, I cannot do that?!

IS that possible? To Deactivate drive, REMOVE, then replace it with a 12TB drive?! But like in a cpl of weeks and still having a functional Synology?!

Thanks

FFFFFFF$$$$$$$$$

I think I am unable to do this now!!! WTF, why can't I just rebuild the storage pool?!

Can I just de-activate the drive, and put a 12TB in there instead?! Can it rebuilt it on the 12TB later?!

IF not, what's the EASIEST WAY to do this, I do NOT have a large external drive to backup, but I guess that seems to be the only way now, right? Is it possible to backup, remove storage pool, redo the storage pool with the 12TB drive, THEN use the backup to re-create EXACTLY the old file structure, backup tasks, plex folder, etc...?!

I SERIOUSLY have messed this up now it looks like!

HELP PLEASE!!!!

(BEFORE)
6 - 6 - 12 - EMPTY

(NOW)
6 - 6 - 12 - 16 [too loud]

(IDEAL)
6 - 6 - 12 - 12

I have 7.3TB DATA! Can I just remove the 16 and replace with 12?! If not, what's the EASIEST WAY to do this?!

Can I do this?!
1. Remove 16
2. Replace with 12 (but NOT REBUILD)
3. Create Storage Pool 2 on 12
4. COPY Storage Pool 1 (degraded) to 2
5. Delete Storage Pool 1
6. Rebuild Storage Pool 2, by adding the other 6/6/12 drives?!

UPDATE! I might be in luck, as this post says, if the entire of the new drive isn't used, you can do the next largest size.

Is that true?!

Based on RAID calculator, 6-6-12-12 AND 6-6-12-16 yield exactly the same 21.8TB usable storage. So, I guess I could just swap 16 and 12 and rebuild?!

Will you stop spamming the thread? You have a problem we get it. Playing against the rules just because you want to will not save you.

If the 16TB drive was part of a complete rebuild array it is now the new minimum size.

Other option you have already mentioned it. Backup, destroy, assemble a new array, and restore.

You won’t be able to make a new secondary volume if you have utilized all bays in the first volume regardless if you remove the drive and add a new one, without destroying the existing volume/pool.

Sorry, I AM PANICKING! Wasn't playing against the rules, was researching and panic posting.

So, I can't replace the 16 with 12 as the other thread suggested?! As the 4TB isn't used for the array?! Not sure what you mean as part of a complete rebuild, I just said "Add new drive" to Storage Pool 1, it took 1 day, and it expanded capacity.

expanded capacity.
Exactly this.

What you can do for sure, if you have that additional 12TB as well as this 16 one, is pull the 16TB out and format it.

Attach it to the NAS and backup your array. Then, destroy it all, reassemble as 6/6/12/12, and restore back from the external 16TB.

Panicking will make things worse, just calm down.

Thanks, but did you see this thread?! the poster says that if the largest drive hasn't been fully allocated to the pool, you can use a second largest drive as replacement. Logically it makes sense to me.

I will do that regardless, ordered the 12TB, will wait until it's here and will see if I can just swap them out. If not, then I guess only option is to backup on the drive, replicate, rebuild and go from there. Would be 100X times more annoying but oh well!
