I've loaded a lot of images but can't see thumbnails of them. I'm a noob so I hope I'm missing something simple.

Uh, not sure. When I open the file Station and Photos app, no thumbnails appear. I'd really like to have them appear.

The file manager does display thumbnails if you enable the view right on top, (the mac and windows finder/explorer do as well).
In photos, there should be, in case index services (configuration screen) is enabled for the folders that need indexing/thumbnailing.

Photo Station (DSM 6) use the general index service. You can start a reindex on the Control Panel.
Synology Photos (DSM 7) use their dedicated index service. You can start a reindex inside the app under Settings.
