1xWD30EFRX 3TB "Red" drive (other 1 removed long ago to recover data lost due to Chronosync third party s/w failure)
Drive reported as failing on 10 Sep

Same day inserted 1 new HUS728T8TALE6L4 (HC320) and attempted to repair, but was first warned to backup data from the failing drive. I inserted another new HC320 into USB enclosure and configured Hyper Backup. Took 1.5 days at ~4Mbps to back up 25%. One bad sector found and original drive now marked as crashed and read only. Quick S.M.A.R.T. returns healthy. Extended S.M.A.R.T. cancelled after stuck at 90% for 1.5 days.

However:

1.DS213j boots fine and I can log in
2. I can see folders, files in File Station
3. Clearly, majority of data is recoverable - possibly even all of it.
I wish to repair the SHR Volume to the extent that I can and use the 2 new HC320 drives. I have not initialized HC320, as I was warned to backup failing drive first.

It seems that ever time I have followed the Synology warnings, advice etc, the situation just got worse!

You have done a lot of things here, but the fact remains that DSM is flagging this drive as a failed drive. Would recommend to try and do a manual backup of data (not via HB), and replace the drive(s).
Thank you for your prompt reply.
How do I perform a manual backup, please?
Forgot to mention all file systems are ext4.

Can't you overrule the disk warning (bad sectors) to have hyper backup active to run the task you want to do?
Thank you for your prompt reply.
A day or so ago I tried that. I can't see the option to do that now.
Seems to be unavailable.

You can use File Station inside DSM. Your USB drive should be visible there as well, and then just copy paste the data that way. See if that will pass. Also, you can leave it as a background task just like HB.

Thank you.
I will try that.
Had hoped to be able to backup the configuration and settings as well.
How do I do that please?

Control Panel > Update and restore > backup configuration.

Keep in mind that not all settings will be backed up (you will get the list), and also application backup has to be done via HB tool.

Solution
Good progress so far. Over 50% of files copied to USB drive using File Station, which seems to be at least twice the speed of Hyper Backup.

Is there a thread or tutorial elsewhere covering how to rebuild the original storage pool from the USB backup and / or failing read-only disk onto the new disks, restoring or retaining original file and folder user permissions etc?

I am sure that is a common request.

Unfortunately, HB does not support QC. It's either, a public IP, DDNS, or LAN IP.

That will work with 4.1 version. Looks like user feedback has been implemented.
