The only device connected to the nas will be the Mac mini to put files on and the tv for plex.

In this case, you have not much to benefit if you use connect both ethernet ports for aggregation.

I’d like to torrent to a separate hard drive on it if it’s possible I currently use transmission on the Mac.

Yes, as already @fredbert advised you can create a new pool with that drive and use a volume on that pool for torrenting destination.
For much newer packages you can install Deluge or Transmission from SynoCommunity.
For even better experience for torrenting with vpn and very frequent updates you may need to go for Docker containers. Since it seems that you still need a lot of help, I would advise to stay with SynoCommunity packages untill you have a little bit more experience to try Docker.

ok thanks for that do you have to download the architectures alpine?

You don't have to download files. Just follow instructions on SynoCommunity to add Package Source and then install from Package Center. Correct architecture will be chosen without any action from you.

Updating library is the same exact process. Just choose to scan for library files in Plex server's webui.

Coming back to the Plex questions:

Plex Media Server (PMS) is installed and running on the NAS, along with its configuration and cache data, and its libraries of media files. This is the server part of the traditional client-server model: the server needs to be running so that clients can connect and access its content. On you Mac and other devices (mobile phone, Apple TV, PC, etc) you run a client application: either the specific Plex client application or a web browser. This is the same type of client-server model employed by email and web servers: the client doesn't have to be running all the time in order for the server to function.

If you used to run PMS on you Mac with media files stored on the WD myCloud (was that it?) then the Mac was the server in this case. But now you are moving the PMS to the NAS and the Mac is now only running the Plex client.

To manage the new PMS you should browse to it and claim it to your Plex account. You should now be able to configure the PMS features via the Settings menu (including when libraries are updated)...

When you add new items to PMS's libraries then you can configure it to detect this and they will be processed almost immediately. There is much more guidance on the Plex forums and help pages.

Yes that sums it up my Mac was the server the WDmycloud the source which is now blank and it offline everything is on the nas.
Are there any other things I can do with the nas other than being a media server for our house?. Any other apps I should be looking into im
Keen to learn about docker etc maybe making more use of the nas like for torrents etc,

Look in Package Center and you'll find lots of things you can use, for example: Synology Photos; Synology Drive; Active Backup for Business; Hyper Backup*; et cetera.

Your PMS replaces using Audio Station, Video Station, and Media Server. Though I've opted to use Media Server instead of Plex's DLNA media streaming since I've configured to only stream music, and I couldn't work out how to stop Plex including video... this is so I can access the music media from a Denon HEOS system and I think most people won't be doing this.

Synology Photos, Contacts, Calendar, Drive, Mail Server/MailPlus can be used to simulate an iCloud type set of services. But I still use iCloud and another email service.
  • Drive has replaced my daily use of Dropbox, and I use the NAS to sync Dropbox content and then Drive to make it accessible to my devices (so getting around the 3 device limit on Dropbox's free account).
  • Photos is my local backup from mobile devices and camera. In the shared album I copy photos from the personal album, then have allowed Plex to read the shared album. Obviously, I don't have any contentious content :)
  • Calendar and Contacts are setup as 'can be used' if I need to switch. For now Contacts has a nearly up to date copy of my iCloud contacts.
  • Mail Server is used to receive archive copies of received emails, forwarded from my paid-for email service.

Just think of the NAS as a mini-server that's more than a file server.

*Use Hyper Backup to maintain backups of the NAS. Best to do it to a second device 'off NAS' so that in the worst case of malware or human error then the backup data isn't directly accessible for deletion etc.

I’ve purchased a new longer Ethernet cable to connect the nas directly to the router.
Do I have to power down or can I just unplug the old one and put a new one in?.

I’ve been buying the next best cables for years too

So far so good plex is behaving good 😊 playing hdr. I’ve now got two bays empty and two drives doing nothing in the house a 2 tb Wdmydrive and a WD black 1tb drive I’m thinking of chucking them in the empty drive space is this a good idea

If they are not doing anything. Is your WD myDrive still working? I might think about if it could be reconfigured as a backup device for the NAS, until you settle on a solution. This would then have the backup one device removed from the NAS. But I don't know how that WD device works: does it install something on the drives it uses, and is it now difficult to rebuild it if the drives get wiped.

I have a 5 bay NAS but have a SHR-1 with 4 drives, so that I could migrate them to a 4 bay NAS if the need arises. The fifth bay is used for a Basic pool that now holds data that came from a failing 6TB WD Elements.

Hi yes the Wdmydrive is still working I’ve just disconnected it from the router and power was going to break it open and together with the Wd black put them both in the DS923+ two spare bays without cocking up the two currently in there.
I won’t do it until I’ve had advice on what to do though as I don’t want to lose everything off the synology now I’ve transferred everything over.

Without creating another thread can someone advise how I go about putting two spare drives in the nas without making a mistake to the pool?.

Once you add the new drives you can use Storage Manager to create a new pool with those two disks. It will not automatically add them to the existing pool/volume

i have two 3 tb drives in there I used the first option volume 1 (shr ) ?. I think it’s like raid 1.
I have two more drive to place in the nas a 2 tb and a 1 tb I’m confused what if I just put them what happens to the existing pool where all my files are now I don’t want them wiped.

You can't add these drives to your existing pool since they are of smaller capacity than the utilised drives.
You can only create a new pool with them, giving either 3TB (RAID0, no drive tolerance) or 1TB (SHR1, 1 drive tolerance)
