Hyper Backup backing up unselected folders

I’ve been trying to set up Hyper Backup to back up all my NAS data to Backblaze, excluding the Movies, Series, and Music folders that I use with Plex. These folders take up too much space, and I don’t need to back them up on B2. In the Hyper Backup configuration, I’ve set it to back up the other folders under the root folder and their contents, specifically unselecting the “Filmes,” “Series,” and “Musicas” folders.

However, Hyper Backup is ignoring my selections and backing up these folders anyway. I’ve tried twice, and each time Hyper Backup is ignoring my exclusions and backing up everything. I can immediately tell it’s backing up everything because I have around 6 TB of data, and 3 TB of that is in these three folders. When I see it’s taking too long or has backed up 1 TB and is still at 20%, I know it’s trying to back up everything.

I’m at a loss. Is Hyper Backup broken? Am I doing something wrong? What do I need to do to back up everything except these three folders?

Be sure not to backup the App’s.
I learned it the hard way, if you backup the photo app, it will also backup the .jpgs !
Same may happen in video and music.

Be sure not to backup the App’s.
You can still backup your apps but, uncheck the related folder(s) then.

One last thing to check do you have synology drive package and are you fully backing that up? If so it could be due to having that on

My reply was for @EAZ1964 on:

And what I showed was an example, no more.

Indeed, for the video app this folder selection can be done, strange enough, implementation is not consistent over the syno apps, eg. photo does not have that setting. It is all or nothing, an that makes sense if you can easily reinstall the app with little or no stored settings, and restore data separately.

I would edit the Hyperbackup job to target another NAS folder. complete the backup then use the Hyperbackup Browser to check its contents. Report back the results here.

ps: What is you version for DSM and Hyperbackup?

Photo Station or Synology Photos.
I know that you can backup Synology Photos.
Photo station :) those were good times long ago, most of us cannot even remember it.
No my remark is about Photos : In Hyper Backup there is no the option to (un) select folders. In Video, there is, as you showed in your post.
So in my understanding, the only way to single backup the photo files is to backup the data folders or the app that includes the data (not both). So therefore my remark not to backup the app, and just do the data.
Audio station only backups the app settings not the music. Therefore inconsistent: 3 apps, 3 different implementations.

Provide a screenshot of all the app packages that you’re backing up
Here are the screenshots of the apps (I deleted the DSM Video app thinking it might have been the reason it was backing up my Movies and TV Series folder but even after deleting it it still backing them up), screenshot of the folders unselected and a screenshot of the backup explorer showing the folder I unselected are backed up...

You can see in my reply to Gerard I unselected the folders and they are still swiping in the explorer (If I open them all the files are there). My DSM version is DSM 7.2.1-69057 Update 5 and my Hyper Backup version is 4.1.1-3758

@tiberio can you change the check mark on the parent folder called “family cloud” to a dash…just click on the check and run a backup again.

The dash will mean only grab selected folders instead of all folders below.

This should be automatic on synology’s part that when you uncheck a subfolder, it should then change the root folder from a check to a dash. Maybe log a support ticket in with them.

I've tried that as well and it didn't work, that is why it took me so long to reply here as I was trying all different methods. According to Synology's Hyper Backup documentation, I need the check because I want the files inside "Family Cloud" to be backed up, as well as the selected folders, and a dash according to the documentation will only backup the selected subfolders and not the files in the folder.

If I backup the photos folder and the Synology Photos app Hyper Backup will backup the same photos twice?

Yes, if you select the photos app plus the folder, it will backup twice. You can see from your screen shot that Home and photo were selected together with the app.

I don’t think it backs up twice, just that when you select synology photos app, the folders homes and photos are selected as well. At least I would hope that’s not how it’s working, otherwise the backup size will be bigger than what it needs to be

I will try and reproduce what you have with regular shared folders where there is no app associated with. I currently have a shared folder where the root folder is dashed and that is only backing up the one sub folder I have within that; confirmed in backup explorer.

I will try a root folder, checked and only one or two sub folders checked and will see if the unchecked sub folders get brought in. My expectation is that it won’t which means what you’re probably seeing is due to whatever package app is associated to those folders is doing it.
