Hyper backup disappears in DSM

Hyper backup disappears in DSM

Background:
-I have a 920+ at home (source) and a remote 220J (target)
-Both have the most recent version of DSM installed and both have the Synology Tailscale package installed.
-On the target machine (220J) I have a user created solely for backup purposes with access to hyper backup, tailscale and DSM.
- I can login to DSM remotely via tailscale with no issues.
- Firewall rules are set to allow access to all ports including HBV over tailscale

Issue:
-I had a backup task running with the above scenario that has been failing by showing that the remote unit is “offline”.
-When I log into the remote unit, I can see Hyper backup vault on the DSM desktop, but then it will disappear after about 10 seconds. I can find HBV via universal search but cannot open it.
-When I make this account an admin temporarily, hyper backup vault displays but still cannot connect to it via the source machine.
-This setup had been working flawlessly but has been failing since about 30 days ago.

Any ideas why HBV would be viewable in DSM and then disappear or what may be causing the above scenario?

First time I heard something like that. You might want to log via ssh into your J NAS and run htop. See if you can see the Hyper Backup process running in the background and if so, it is "disappearing" or not.

Is the target NAS tasked with something else other than being an HB destination?

Thank you for your quick reply.
  1. The J NAS is only used as a destination for hyperbackup. It has 1 admin account and a a separate account for the backup.
  2. I was able to log into the J NAS via SSH as the admin and run the command you suggest ed and did not see any hyperbackup processes.
  3. All other connections via tailscale between the 2 devices work perfectly. Ie I can log in To DSM via tailscale remotely to the J NAS and SSH into it via tailscale with no issues.
