Hi, I am running 2 x backups via hyper backup to an external 18 TB external USB HDD.

the two backups in question have 2 files on the USB Drive that are 7TB and 3TB (application sizes) respectively.

However, the drive in question has less than 1TB free as per the reporting via ssh and the NAS itself:

/dev/sdq1 17T 16T 788G 96% /volumeUSB2/usbshare

I did a bit of reading and looked into the backup rotations for each backup and changed the settings to delete the older backups but that only resulted in space release of around 100GB. The first change was to keep 12 months worth of backups (52) and now it is set at roughly 6 months (26) backups and this is one of the settings which is mirrored to the other backup set:

so I am now running a consistency check ( I don't know if that will release space)

but how can my 2 x backup files be around 10TB but the NAS reports that the USB drive is taking up 16TB - how do I go about removing the extra 6TB?

Any suggestions?

this is how the rotation is set

does this need to be changed to release space?

Typically, many users would set a schedule like this in customized retention:
every day for the last 7 days,
every week for the last month
last backup of each month for the last year
one a year for 5 years (or 10)

then they would set smart recycle.
Max versions 7+4+11+ 5= 27

I see, but would a change this this reduce the disk space consumption?

I don't understand how the files are 10TB but yet consuming 16TB

a common issue is that both photo package and the photos are included, this doubles the backup as they are back upped twice. drop one of these and see if it helps

Ok

I understand that photos as /photo the directory itseld

But what do u mean by photo package?

How can i ‘drop’ this
Do u mean exclude it from the backup?

If so how do i exclude photo package and go about removing it from the existing backups already created?

I mean it is a good theory perhaps that is where the extra space is being consumed

I kind of fear i might need to delete and start again
Hope not!

Check if one of your backup tasks includes synology photo app.
No need to redo all backups, just remove it from the backup tasks (if your photos are in the backup as well).

yes it does and it also includes synology drive, and the video station

I will remove these apps as I back the data up via the actual directories themselves. But will this free up space on my USB drive or how can I reclaim the space back?

Not sure, maybe someone else knows.

ok cool

guess worse case scenario is I delete the bigger backup file and start again ensuring that the apps music, video and photo are excluded or include them but don't back the directories up...

I know you can manually delete restore points. If you know which one contains an issue you can specifically delete that one. in your case the files were there from the beginning, so difficult to tell what happens if you delete them.

What u mean go into versions and delete that way?

If so, I beleive i already have as the rotation job did that

In hyper backup, you can click the small clock and enter Hyper backup explorer.
There you will find al your historical backup points to restore a file. You can also delete te full backup point if you think that day is not ok or contains data that should not have back upped.

at this point I might have to start from the beginning
because space is getting lower
