I think I know the answer, but if I add a 16tb drive to an array with 4tb and 14tb drives, am I locked into using 16tb+ for future replacements or additions at that point? I think yes, but wanted to verify.

I saw a deal on 16tb, but if I add the 16tb and in the future should a drive fail, which are a mixture of 4tb and 14tb, I can no longer use 4tb I'm pretty sure because of the 14tb's, but then I would be locked to only +16tb in the future right? Another thread the OP said he couldnt replace his failed/crashed 4tb with a cold storage 4tb because his SHR has 10tb (or bigger, cant remember)

Some clarification here.

For replacements.... You may replace faulty drives with drives of the same capacity.

For additions... As @Rusty said, to additions of the same pool, yes, you must go with the largest size if you seek capacity expansion. However... you may create a new pool with any size drive.

Oh, I was unaware of that, somebody just had a crash, he posted here, but could not replace his 4tb with a cold storage 4tb because he also had 10tb (or something like that, I would have to find that thread).

Thanks to given to both of you for the answers.

Replace drive to prevent degradation is one case, expanding your volume is another, and there is a "fix your already degraded volume" case as well.

case 1 (replace to prevent degradation, like DSM is reporting bad sectors but volume is still working), you should be able to use the same drive to replace the faulty one.

In this case you will have to have a spare slot where to install the future new drive. Only then the replace drive feature will present itself and you will be able to initiate the process.

If you do not have a spare slot, then you are entering the "degraded" scenario option, where you replace the faulty drive with the new one in the same slot. In this case again, you should be able to replace the same capacity drive (or larger).

For expanding scenario (in SHR volume), you will have to use the drive with the same or larger capacity then your current largest drive.

I believe both of you :ROFLMAO:
I was referring to this thread where the OP said he couldn't replace a 4tb with a 4tb and rebuild his array, he said he had to use 16tb because his others were 16tb... Now as I am understanding him, his nas itself was the problem?

Either way, I think I'll do my best to stick with what I've got for now. I was pretty sure I knew the answer, which is correct, => largest drive.
