Some packages in DSM are installed on the system partition, a choice that currently isn't available for the rest of us as far as I know. Would be interesting to know if anyone has played with this and managed to install other packages in that partition? Would be practical to be able have other apps there aswell...

Sometimes I wish to move some packages to another volume. Some packages are more messy to move than others, would be nice to have them "always available" (since the system partition is "raid'ed" over all drives if I'm not mistaken?).

An underlying question is then, “why multiple volumes?” Generally multiple volumes exist when RAID types or pool formatting must differ. The system partition is the province of “root”.

I've got some problems to decide how to setup my NAS in a way I'm happy with at the moment, currently I've got one volume/drive. Not entirely happy with that but I'm having some issues with my 12TB drives aswell, trying to identify which one is making strange noises/tones sometimes. Trying to decide at the same to try to go all-SSD or not at the moment, so I'm a bit of a mess aswell right now. :)

Maybe. Been spending so much time on various parts of this migration, that I don't recall. Not a serious...
