Well said ... a fresh departure from the fanboi and hater monologs 🍻

Amen! Agree with WT
PS: I’m not a hater… But I do “hate it” when finding out about an upgrade: masquerading as an upgrade, when it’s actually a downgrade.

As much as I use camera settings for SS I have read many others having trouble and disappointed with the removal of H.265 support.

If Synology want to get rid of H.265 due to licensing costs, then why not make it available to the people that have bought Synology camera licenses? I personally have bought 4 and they are not cheap.

So for many the dropping of H.265 has made the licenses they have purchased pretty much useless unless they buy more expensive cameras that can do the settings and just use the NAS as a storage unit for the recordings.

If this is Synology's future there should be no charge for camera licenses as it will be no different to backing up a heap of PCs and iPhones to the NAS.

It seems pretty obvious that Synology cares less and less about the homeconsumers. When purchasing my next NAS, it's more than likely I'll start to check out other brands...

On my 718+ & 2x 720+, I've bought 3 licenses, and that's gonna be "it". Prior to 7.2.2 I had just converted all to H265, which of course now has now been un-done... Not because of loss of CPU and Ram, no, even the 718+which is doing most of the work, is still running like a top, no slowdown whatsoever... No need to consider moving Workload to (More Powerful) 720+'s. Not because of 7.2.2, but because I agree that H265 just wasn't as smooth in operation on systems as H264 is, but for those needing to reduce space used, it's a kick in the pants...

I can't threaten to never purchase another NAS from them because I probably won't ever need another... 3: (Main, Backup, and Experimental)
And 3 camera pics on a Phone is optimum, So that leaves licenses out too.... (All other cameras ftp Motion Detect stills by camera to NAS already).
Systems are at maximum ram (some Synlology, some 3rd party with no prompts.)... So that leave Ram purchase out...
I'm a Seagate Fanboy.... I've tried others but always come back... So that's another profit center loss too....
My cameras are Newer 4K ONVIF cameras, and older used 2K Hikvision.... With Spares increasing as I transition to 4K. so no camera purchases are on horizon.....
and I added 3rd party ESATA buss drive enclosure, the last remaining Profit center is bypassed..... System runs fine now...
"What, Me Worry?"

I have asked support what's happening, and when I get to specifics so as to avoid the receipt of another Release Note and Other documents, (Read over and over) and specific answers are asked for, I'm batting 3 Yes, its good, 3 No, its bad... answers on the same approximate question... ????

So I'm still at 7.2.1-5 and watching from sidelines to see what "Happens"... As I did when 7 came out.... I think it was 7.1-2 or so before I finally jumped...

NAS Use: Storage, and use Surveillance Station on each NAS: on computer I log in directly to NAS for configs, and use Desktop Icons to view contents of NAS's on W7-64 and W10 PRO computers on LAN..
On iPhones iPads use DS CAM, DS FILE, DS FINDER, And DS ROUTER.... DRIVE is loaded but rarely used. I've used DS CAM DS FILE World Wide, and am Very Thankful to Synology for it's use.... Saved my bacon a couple of times!
NAS's used for storage and security... and 3 cameras are view only accessed by the HOA so folks can see Mountain Switchback Road conditions with DS CAM on their phones...
That is it... So my needs are not complex or unusual! Yet I have put the brakes on, until I determine: "What is Next?"

Yeah I complain.... When things don't work.... Been known to compliment too... When things are good.... I Just recently gave credit for SS & Licenses from the standpoint of Worlkwide access at another site. Twice now I've been banned at Synology's site.... Once on the Loss of CPU and Ram in 6.2 (DS 215J) which was probably intentional so that 7 would not look so bad.... and Now with 7.2.2. It's like I struck a nerve there both times... But now, I really don't know what to think...

I'm not Jumping up and down mad..... I'm actually very concerned.......

I'm reminded of Broadcast companies: RCA, AMPEX, BTS, PHILLIPS, ACCOM, ABEKAS, QUANTEL, HARRIS, and others... and how they died... I've seen this movie before..

Surely Synology staff monitor this forum as they do Reddit (and others) and, rather than stifle Synology criticism, users should feel welcome to express their concerns.

Selling a product/service and then arbitrarily removing features is wrong (deceitful, outrageous... so many ways to describe it). Codec access was sold. Previously, Synology did the smart thing by removing default access, and requiring users to install a codec pack. This reduced licensing costs to those who actually had need of codecs for Synology packages. However now, existing users are now responsible for ensuring downstream device compatibility (and the possible upgrade/replacement of their downstream devices to handle duties formerly managed by the NAS), accept lossy transcoding of their native files, and assume the additional storage requirements of less efficient codec conversions.

Synology bean counters must be high-fiving themselves. As well, Synology can claim improved NAS performance (all the user postings describing the extended tired performance of Synology Photos thumbnail and video conversions, can now be blamed on PCs, iPhones, game consoles ...). Oh, happy day.

As others have shown, Synology's TOS claims rights to disable the NAS entirely, however steps in that direction should never be taken lightly. Let's not be of the posture "if you don't like it here you can leave". No need for that at all. Let the words of the prophet Rodney King ring true.

BTW, Synology's Media Server is affected as well. So many moms and pops using DLNA to watch videos will soon be displeased to know that Synology has pulled the rug out from under them.

Well said Telos.

users should feel welcome to express their concerns.
By all means! Excellent points for sure. We all hope that these comments will have effect but even on via official channels those voices need to be in a large 5 or 6 digit number to make an impact.

Let's not be of the posture "if you don't like it here you can leave"
By "here" I'm sure you mean "with Synology" right? As all are welcome on the forum ofc, but then again not much an unofficial one can do.

Still, let's keep the momentum going, who knows maybe our voice will make an impact in the end!
