SOSHO & SMB vendors:
ASUSTOR, AC&NC, Buffalo, D-link, Drobo, HP, LaCie, Netgear, QNAP Systems, Synology, Thecus, TrueNAS, Western Digital, ZyXEL

Total NASes from the SOSHO & SMB in operation:
46 153 846
based on the unclear market share numbers and used reversal engineering from few charts and last know Syno 6M number of NASes in operation there is the final number for existing NAS in operation at the mentioned level.

Taken into account, the most common model in this category is the 4 bay NAS. So for the purpose of calculating consumption, I took the DS920 + model:
1632237085633.png

Note: for any reason, the decimal point is shown as a comma.

1st Operating model scenario:
6h/daily in operation
12h/daily in idle
6h/daily switched off

Apparent power for all NASes:
11 385,05 GVArh
= needs to be produced annually ... what is equivalent of annual produced capacity from 3 Nuclear reactors (from 440 operable in 2020 worldwide)

When:
- 50% of the NASes are operated in China and India
- 15% of the NASes are operated in US
- 35% of the NASes are operated in the rest of the world
then
based on default Harmonized Grid Emission factors:
all of the NASes are responsible for 37,24 Mt CO2 emissions
what is the equivalent of total annual emissions from Ireland (one of the 208 countries in the world)

2nd Operating model scenario:
3h/daily in operation
3h/daily in idle
18h/daily switched off

it will decrease the total CO2 emissions to 12,47 Mt CO2 what is -67% from the previous operation model.

For the full-time SOHO spinners:

6h/daily in operation
18h/daily in idle
0h/daily switched off
it will get the total CO2 emissions to 48,22 Mt CO2 what is +29% from the first operating model.
What is the equivalent of total annual emissions from Portugal.

So I'm out from the full-time spinning from this summer.
Just a small step to fewer emissions.
