I fully understand your point.
Two years ago, I completed a deep audit of other options.

I liked the TrueNAS SCALE solution on my own HW the most. However, when I understood how the entire development (then) of the new platform, which was supposed to replace the old inflexible world of NASs, was handled, .... at least I had investments (experience) left.

This discussion is really only suitable for people who use the full potential of the NAS world. It makes no sense only for PLEX server users and a few trifles. For that purpose - it doesn't matter what kind of NAS you have.

For me, the biggest bottleneck in this NAS world is still the absolutely insufficient level of first-line support, which is oriented towards questions like "I forgot my password."
Second-line support, even paid, does not exist.
And I understand your view on ABB.

Hardware does what I need now... (Must say: Bit frustrated with loss of SS as Motion Detect Source and H265 loss)

So: Because the system(s) here have all hardware options they can presently support - (and some others I've added that I wasn't supposed to, but did!), and they still do: (With the SS Mot Detect work around) what I still need them to do..... THE TOP LINE of this post is main reason why I stay. I must continue to harp on the fact that Loss of SS as Motion Detect Source: has Ceased all License Purchases since that decision was made by Synology....... Which doesn't affect MY Bottom Line....

Other than making new content for a new platform, I wonder if there was some other reason for leaving.

For me it is how far behind Synology is with hardware. There is no U.2/EDSFF drive support that is orders of magnitude faster. That is the biggest sticking point for me in how insanely behind they are regarding higher performance storage. We are talking 4x the storage density and 10-30x throughput speed improvement. That puts Synology woefully behind on the hardware side of things.

Gotta admit I was (am?) ready to jump. But as docker containers make up the huge bulk of my use, I see nothing in TrueNAS Scale, UnRAID, Proxmox, or the UGreen, Asustor, Terramaster triad, that offers a suitable OS. And building my own power-efficient server doesn't appeal to me.

I will likely stay in-family and use Synology primarily for bulk storage and a backup repo, and continue to run Docker from mini-PCs.

... and Wundertech Frank will return to the fold after his dalliance with the devil proves unsatisfying.
