User introduction long time NAS user...but not a very smart one

I've been using NAS for a SOHO backup for about 15 years. I started with a 2-bay Buffalo (LinkStation), and two years ago upgraded to a Synology DS418.
I have simple needs for onsite backup at home.
A recent power interruption (the NAS is on a UPS...but this didn't help the power plug that came out of the CPU) caused 3 of 4 drives to show either "crashed" or "partition errors". The subsequent troubleshooting revealed I didn't understand RAID 10 as well as I though I did.
So here I am, trying to become a smarter NAS user.
