I'm trying to figure out the maximum HDD I can out in a DS118 or a DS218play. The "compatibility list" shows drives from 10TB-16TB but I'm just guessing that's the maximum they have tested. The maximum volume size is 108TB but I don't know how that figure into the equation.

Thanks. Does that mean any size drive up to 108TB can be used or there is just no max drive specification from Synology?

SATA3 is what you need. Practically speaking the DS-118 is likely unable to use a drive larger than 108TB... but it will be in the dust bin long before that is available.

Synology only lists tested drives.

Yes, I was interested in 20TB-30TB drives for future consideration. Sounds like these would work?

Use Synology's INcompatibility drive matrix as a guide for selecting drives. Also read reviews, make sure to go with boxed retail NAS rated or Enterprise drive.
