Hackers have infected thousands of network-attached storage (NAS) devices from Taiwanese vendor QNAP with a new strain of malware named QSnatch.

Over 7,000 infections have been reported in Germany alone, the German Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-Bund) said today. Thousands more are believed to be infected worldwide, in what appears to be an ongoing outbreak.

I can only imagine that Synology will be targeted in the near future. QNAP issued an advisory recommending updating and moving from default ports (a good practice here as well). At this time the infection vector is unknown.

You can follow this thread from the QNAP community forum.

sad story of each new line technology expansion. In this case NAS to consumer sector. People from hidden dark side of the Moon use their abilities in wrong way. It was same in Smart phones. Then I can imagine how it will hit IoT devices, when massive deployment will open a door to anywhere.

Bad news for all NAS users, not just QNAP. It’ll scare users (limiting the NAS’ usefulness) and potential buyers.

I feel sorry for QNAP users and hope that this gets fixed soon with minimum damage.

Little (sometime more) level of paranoia is a foundation of better mental health level after such attacks.
