I would like to migrate my existing data data from a HDD to a SSD. Later I would like the option to add a second SSD (RAID), if this is possible.

I currently have a DS718+ with a single 4TB HDD. It is in Storage Pool 1, formatted as ext4 (according to 'mount'). (aside is it possible/worth it to go to btrfs when making the change below?)

Here is what I think the steps are, but I have one or two uncertainties

1) Install SSD in unused bay

2) On reboot format the drive.

??? Which options will I have for this ???

3) ?? move the data to the new drive??
I don't know how to do this step. I have user accounts and also various apps (Syno photos, DS audio etc...)

4) Shut down and remove HDD

Thanks for any tips/guidance!

Steps are fine in term of migration. To be specific, after installing the new disk just use Storage Manager to make a new pool from it and a fresh volume.

Then, migrate the data using the control panel > Folder section. Try not to move folders in this manner that are tied to an installed app/service, before you uninstall that particular app and reinstall it on your new volume.

User accounts are configured on DSM level so that will not change with the introduction of a new volume.

In terms of btrfs, it would be smart to use it as it unlocks certain features and apps that simply are not supported on ext4. Also, certain packages will require it as a prerequisite but that only makes sense if you will use those apps in the first place.

Thank much for the guidance Rusty.

My plan:

1) load drive, format, create new volume
2) for each installed app: stop app, uninstall, reinstall on new volume, then stop again
3) control panel -> shared folders : move each to new volume (e.g. homes, NetBackup, music, photos)
4) start apps

Seems like I'll have to reconfigure each app, and the related login portals? A bit painful, but doable i guess.

There are several apps which are not allowed to be uninstalled
  • python2
  • san manager
  • hybrid share
  • secure sign-in
  • universal search
  • SMB service
Should I just ignore these? I assume they'll get migrated on their own somehow?
