Mining hack on QNAP

Our collegue nas users are victim of a vulnerability:

QNAP units have been routinely compromised every 6-12 months. Could this be an artifact of earlier hacks which opened their NAS to external control?

I wonder how Synology has managed to dodge these attacks.
