If you backup cloud storage then you can determine the retention policy rather than hoping a user doesn't fully delete items, for instance.

Should you have Internet access outages then data can be made available on the LAN. Big companies can re-route internal sites to other Internet gateways [while they still use WANs that aren't 100% over Internet] but smaller organisations may not have this ability.

Also for cloud services: do you know where the data is physically stored? Do you know the local legal jurisdiction and how you fit into it?

Hello, This client has a physical office but has been working from home for months due to corona.
It is a fairly small customer with about 10 employees.
What do you mean by: "Also for cloud services: do you know where the data is physically stored? Do you know the local legal jurisdiction and how to fit into it?"
I think you are referring to the privacy legislation (GDPR) or do you mean where the current data is stored at Microsoft?
If I would store the backups I would comply with the GDPR of the country where the customer is located (same country).

What do you mean by: "Also for cloud services:
Geographic location. E.g. Is it in US, EU, [UK!], China, etc. ?

The 'cloud' is implemented by physical devices and interlinked by physical cables. The local laws of the physical data centre will apply to it and any data that is stored there.

If the cloud service provider offers a choice of data centre location then choose the most appropriate; if the cloud service provider does not offer a choice of data centre location then assume that you data is fair game to the local law enforcement and you should implement your own measures to ensure that the right level of privacy is applied to your data.

It's in Europe i checked on the 365 website.
I thought you meant if i backup the 365 account and GDPR...

Still curious if anyone would advise yes or no to backup for instance a 365 account

I have a customer that uses 365 and isn't aware that this could be an issue
Active backup for O365 is the Synology package you are looking for. Always backup your cloud data. Do not rely on the cloud provider to offer or support "backup". Their main task is HW and SW uptime, not necessarily backup.

@Rusty thanks, always thought that this wouldn't be necessary as for the big companies have all things in order for their customers.
Point is what do you count for such a service, there are many companies (small and bigger) that deliver these solutions for very less money (per account/user). I can also deliver this for my customers but the very first time you need to know what is and isn't an 'acceptable rate' (total size/per 365 user/including the possibility of having to give support)?
Any idea about this is welcome.

No idea of a plan moneywise (storage/frequency/support/per account) to offer a customer o_O
