I currently have a DS1821+ with 2 separate volumes - first volume is 4x20Tb drives, and second volume is 4x14Tb drives.

Due to space starting to get low, I have decided to get another DS1821+ and want to move the second volume to the new DS1821+ and then add another 4 disks to both volumes and eventually change to SHR2 for redundancy purposes once enough discs are purchased.

I am hoping not to have to buy 4 new drives for the new NAS straight away, so I was hoping to be able to transplant the 4 drives from the second volume into the new NAS to start and then get additional drives later.

Has anyone done this before?

Thanks.

In short yes, it will work just fine. Do make sure that the new 1821+ is on the same or newer DSM version, and then migrate the drives over.

The DSM wizard will detect this move as "migratable", reinstall the DSM by making the adjustments, and probably nothing will change. Ofc that will depend on where the apps are installed on the initial 1821.

If the packages are installed on the main volume (the one remaining in the original NAS) then you will have to reinstall those on the "new" NAS.

Volume and data being moved will be detected and with no change.

Saying this, be sure to have a backup of critical data (or all data) on the side before doing this migration just in case.

Am curious...why not SHR-1? You'll gain space and with the older 1821+ as a backup, you should be covered....
The older 1821+ won't be a backup, I'm moving one storage pool from the old 1821+ to the new 1821+ and then adding 4 new drives of the same size to each pool - having SHR-2 will allow for 2 drive redundancy
