My DS920+ has a single eSATA port, which is connected to a DX517.
Question is: Is there a way to add a second DX517 to the same NAS? For example, using a USB3.0 to eSATA cable?

I ask this with several things already realized: (1) the USB3.0-to-eSATA connection would (if it works at all) be a little slower than the straight eSATA connection (but plenty fast enough for my application) and (2) there are more cost-effective ways to expand storage.

I just need to know if anyone has tried this, with the result that the second DX517 is recognized as its own storage pool by the NAS.

Thanks!

The 920+ supports only (1) DX517 expansion cabinet, connected via esata. Although a disc array can be spanned across the DX517, that is not best practice, a separate volume should be created on it.
