So would you consider buying a 720+ (with an extra 8GB RAM) an upgrade to a DS916+ (with 8GB RAM) or a downgrade because of the 2 bay vs 4 bays?
Who are you asking? The CPU are different and likely so are some interfaces. Also, replacing one NAS with another is not the same question as having no NAS and buying the right one for now. Like I said above

And if you saw I have a DS218+ and now a DS1520+ and wondered why: it's because I didn't get a DS918+ at the time of the DS218+.

As I said, I'm considering this as long term investment, so my move would be to wait and save a bit more for a DS920+. 4 bays allows expandable storage. Thanks to everybody for provided guidance.
