For 1000 USD I think you'll be able to get whatever you need in the 2-bay format, which top two models are DS720+ and DS220+.

The DS720+ is the higher spec and for your extra (UK £90 inc vat) the main differences are:
FeatureDS720+DS220+
CPUIntel Celeron quad core 2.0 GHz
(burst to 2.7 GHz)
Intel Celeron dual core 2.0 GHz
(burst to 2.9 GHz)
Can add DX517 5-bay expansion unit?YesNo
Has unpopulated M.2 drive slots for adding SSD read/write caching?YesNo
Warranty3 years, extendable to 52 years

The DS720+ higher performance comes from the CPU and the M.2 caching (if used and needed). Its extra storage capabilities come from being able to add a DX517, in which case getting a bigger bay'ed NAS is more cost effective.

Otherwise, they both have the same built-in 2GB and maximum 6GB RAM, and two 1G LAN ports.

If you have cash spare after getting the NAS and drives then I'd strongly recommend using it to buy a UPS. Plus backup storage.
