Preferred form factor DS (DiskStation)

Number of bays: 2-bays

Do you have any existing drives that you plan on using? Yes

Prefered RAID array setup for this NAS: not sure

This NAS will be used for: backup, multimedia, utilities (docker, VPN, reverse proxy, web hosting, etc.), downloads (torrents, USENET, WebDAV, FTP, etc.)

Max budget for this setup: 600 GBP

Number of users that will utilize this NAS: 0

Any preferred network connectivity? 1G, 2.5G

Where will this NAS be used: LAN and over the Internet

Any special network requirements: /

Special cloud provider connectivity: /
 
Taking all of this into account, including 2.5G that Synology does not have other than via optional 10G cards, the candidate here would be the brand new DS723+. Its 10G optional card will also unlock 2.5, and 5G speeds but combined with the NAS it will go over the budget.

That being said the NAS has dual 1G that with the current DSM version and SMB version does offer multichannel functionality out of the box and speeds of 2G with no additional cost.

On top of this model, the upcoming DS224+ might also be a good option. It will most likely be coming with an Intel CPU as opposed to the 723 running with an AMD one, but all in all, it will also be a very good option.
