My DS223j is visible on File Explorer under Network, but to open it, it asks for "Network Credentials". I've tried various things but couldn't fix it. What can I do?

Solution
When I was trying to access the DS223j with the file explorer, it asked for "Network Credentials" and gave my email address as user. What was confusing me was that what it really wanted was the NAS credentials, i.e. details of an account I had set up on the DS223j. I also noticed that hidden away was the possibility of "using a different account" where I could enter the NAS user and password. Then it worked! 🙂. Luckily I had not resorted to doing a network reset.

Now I can access the DS223j NAS from all my devices including the laptop running Windows 11 and the (older) desktop running Windows 10. I can't access the old NAS from the Windows 11 laptop, but I can live with that.
Entering DSM credential does not work? How are DSM SMB settings configured? Guessing this is a windows OS client issue? We have a number of similar topics, so you are welcome to search.

Does it authenticate if you use a synology DSM user account?

If so the reason you are receiving the prompt is due to the user name/password of the windows computer login, is not the same as a DSM username/password.

2 options to resolve. 1) make the DSM account the same user name/password as your windows computer account. Then clicking on the NAS under network will just open and show you the folders that the user account has access to. 2nd) option is when you are prompted for network credentials, enter user name/password of the dsm account and choose to remember or save the credentials.

If this doesn’t answer what you are trying to ask, then you need to expand the question a bit more. But the aforementioned I believe may answer what you’re attempting to ask. Let us know

Background to my problem: For many years I have had a (now obsolete - ZyXEL NAS) attached to a home network consisting of a desktop PC running Win10 and various other devices. A laptop running Win11 recently connected to the network could not access the existing NAS so I purchased a DS223j in the hope it would be plug and play. The file explorer on both PCs finds the new NAS but cannot open it because of the “network credential” requirement. I have tried various passwords to no avail. Synology Assistant on the Win11 machine finds the new NAS, but for some reason the Assistant on the Win10 machine no longer finds it. It appears that I have a network security problem so the next thing I will do is to try to find out what the situation is with NTLM.
