Hi,

I have just replaced the HDD in my DS215j with a
1 x Seagate ST6000NM019B Exos Enterprise (7E10) 6TB SATA Hard Drive w/ 7200RPM 6Gb/s 256MB Cache

It all works fine, but has a constant noise from the HDD, which sounds pretty much like a human heartbeat - same two thumps and same tempo. The beat coincides with a flicker of the Disk 1 ligtht.

So far I have tried-

-Enable advanced HDD hibernation after 10 minutes,
-Unplugged the LAN (as suggested on another thread).

Neither made any difference.

Any suggestions on how to stop the noise (other than switch off the NAS) will be greatly appreciated,

CJ

Solution
Now solved, thanks.
I worked through the anti-hibernating list provided by Rusty.

In Download Station there was an old, duplicate download that shouldn't have been there. I deleted it and the heartbeat stopped. I added a different download which downloaded successfully - no heartbeat. I added the original download again and the heartbeat started.
I currently have no downloads, the NAS hibernates correctly and the annoying noise has stopped.
Thanks to all of you who contributed,
CJ
A way to help mitigate the noise would be to insert foam bumpers or velcro into the drive tray.

Any HDD with over 4TB (included) will be noisy for sure.

Enable advanced HDD hibernation after 10 minutes,
Depending on the list of services and apps running on the NAS this might not help as those will keep the hdd/nas awake.

Thanks. I have padded it out and loosened the screws holding it in a little - they are in little rubber washers, and this has certainly quietened it a bit, so thanks for the advice.

Thanks Rusty,

I'll go through the 'anti-hibernating' list and see what helps.

It’s possible that you need to update the firmware for your HDD (check here). Some users have reported that newer Seagate firmwares have significantly reduced clicking noise.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have just checked and unfortunately my HDD appears to have the latest firmware, so its not that.
I'm now working through the 'hibernation preventers' as suggested earlier and will report any success,
Cheers,
CJ
