Hi, I Recently renewed My PC, disconnected DS218 as is then reconnected to new PC, Should I have wiped the drives clean on the DS218 and started afresh? Stumbling along a bit with NAS etc. Any & all advise greatly appreciated. Mike P.

Why would you have to wipe a NAS when you connect another device to it? I'm struggling to think of a scenario where this would be necessary. I wouldn't wipe my USB drives because I'm putting them into a new Mac.

Maybe if you can describe how you use the NAS.

Thank You for the reply. The reasoning being that some devices will not read a medium from other devices, an example I have a Nikon D810 and a D850 neither will read the cards from the other. While the new and old computers are both PCs old win 10 & new win 11, Just want to be sure that the systems that I have in place are going to "work".

OK. I think that's more due to those being cameras and historically they have been finicky with reading/writing to memory cards. The advice for them was always to format in the camera you are going to use it in. I looked a year or so ago and it's still a common response, plus other advice to avoid deleting images. It seems photogrtaphers have learnt to be hyper risk averse. If it works and you don't lose data then why change your process and risk it?

Back to NAS: you are most likely connecting between PC and NAS using Windows File Sharing (SMB / CIFS). The storage media stays wholly in the NAS and is accessed using the file sharing client (in PC) and server (in NAS). There is no direct physical connection between the hard drives and the PC.

Short answer: you don't have to wipe the NAS, just connect to it from your new PC (just like you did from your old PC).

Not the same. You are not installing your NAS drives into the PC, or vice versa.
