No 7.2 for me. What happens in 2025?

I have a couple of DS918+ running DSM 7.1.1. I don't have the option to update to 7.2 - for whatever reason.

Synology appear to be saying its all over in 2025. No more security or other updates for me. I'm expected to junk these units and cough up for a couple more which will only have a five year lifespan too?

OTOH have I heard you can manually update to 7.2? But that's going to break stuff?

I manually upgraded DS418play too. No problems, all working fine.

Thanks. So why - if 7.2 works fine - don't Synology want me to know by sending an automatic update alert?

Is there nothing new I can use as the DS 918+ is getting older? Immutable files for example. At first glance that seems clever to protect backups from ransomware. but I haven't done the research as I thought I was SOL.

Ironically that is in the v7.2 release notes, but not among the v7.1 release notes (where it should have been noted), so the affected users would not know this.

I have a 918+ and did the manual update, 7.2 and 7.2 release 3, both worked fine. Unsure about your EOL in 2025 comments.

Thank you, that surprised me. 7.2 only came out a few weeks ago and will be gone in two years!

I manually update my DS218+ to DSM 7.2, soonish after it was released. That PDF still hasn’t a set date for the 7.2 end of extended life phase. It will be over two years from now, and looks from other versions to be a year longer than that at least.

OK, thanks all. Now I know I can update to 7.2 what are the advantages and disadvantages?

I haven't worked out why Synology aren't alerting me to update - as they always have until now - other than for some reason they don't want me to.

@DeltaGolf - Security updates for 7.1.1 go through 2026, not 2025, per the PDF you pointed to.

For advantages and disadvantages, maybe check out the release notes that were posted above.

If you use Docker, you should definitely upgrade, as Container Manager, Docker's successor, is a lot more capable.
