From the bright minds at Synology Support...
S.M.A.R.T. attributes lack a unified standard as they are defined by individual drive manufacturers. There's no guaranteed correlation between these attributes and drive failure. Relying solely on S.M.A.R.T. attributes to assess drive health can lead to misjudgment.

Considering the above factors, Synology has made the decision not to display S.M.A.R.T. attributes in Storage Manager. Instead, we recommend that users refer to the Drive Status information we provide to understand the health of their drives. Additionally, users can enhance data security by utilizing RAID configurations with redundancy and maintaining regular data backups.
This could infer that we may discontinue extended SMART scans as there is "no guaranteed correlation between these attributes and drive failure" 🤔

Check out Scrutiny for a SMART replacement or @jeyare's resource How to monitor, control, damage check of disks in your Synology NAS (BTW... where is jeyare?).

A more cynical person than myself might wonder if by removing SMART data in DSM Synology are really removing the only means by which some of the wilder 'degraded HDD' notifications by DSM could be contradicted...? I'm thinking of the notifications generated when using non-Synology HDDs, for instance.

But nah, like they say, it must be because some of the SMART data is customised by manufacturers for their particular drives...and that could be too confusing for us end users and lead to all kinds of 'misjudgment'...:ROFLMAO:

While I may agree with the statement that smart data is messy and non standardized, IMHO removing or restricting access to information is never a good sign for what may come next...

Synology is certainly giving many of these signs regarding to HDDs lately.
