Hi,

Apologies if this is covered elsewhere but I haven't been able to find the answer.

I have an DS1817+ and I want to update to DSM 7.

I basically only use the NAS as file storage and I don't have it connected to the internet. I have Quickconnect disabled etc. My question is, do I need to have the NAS connected to the internet, have Quickconnect enabled etc to update to DSM 7? I know I can download and do manual update, I'm just not sure if the update needs online connection.

Also, do I need to have internet connection to use the new Synology authentication app?

Thanks in advance.

For the dsm you can but then when apps start to update it will need internet access to pulll the packages.

It uses your public name of the nas to function, you will need it in that case. If you use your lan ip address of the nas then no

Thanks Rusty. I'm not hard and fast on upgrading to DSM 7. I'm looking to see if it's more secure, or at least easier to make more secure. I was ransomwared previously (probably my own fault) and have been cautious about external access since.

I was going to suggest you try out virtual DSM but then see that the DS1817+ isn't in VMM compatibility list which seems odd. A google and I see someone has a page about using a DFS1817+.

Since the thread title applies to my question, too, I will give it a try:

I'm trying to manually update my DS918+ from 6.2.4.25556 and downloaded the patch for the latest DSM7 (final). The .pat file is about 337MB and I've used system control to update using the patch file.

After a while, guess DSM was uploading the file to the NAS, at least the first few seconds, but it returns after a minute or two and says (translated from German): "task failed, please logon again and retry."

Of course I'm logged into as admin and I've already tried several times, to no avail so far.

System protocol does not reveal anything and there is plenty of hard disk space available.
However /var/log/messages, shows those lines at the time of failing:
2021-07-04T18:07:34+02:00 XXXX synoscgi_SYNO.Core.Upgrade.Patch_1_clean[3283]: update_cpputil.cpp:111 inFile failed: eof: no, fail: yes, bad: no, error=No such file or directory 2021-07-04T18:07:34+02:00 XXXX synoscgi_SYNO.Core.Upgrade.Patch_1_clean[3283]: update_cpputil.cpp:123 /[email protected] does not exist

So no clue what failed and how to proceed... Do you?

Guess I solved this myself. It was my firewall! It blocked as some of the logs revealed, the access to some Synology sites. After stopping the firewall, the update started and is still running...

Will report back if a have some more results...

So all is up again besides Baikal calendar.

This package is now too old and as it seems I've lost my calendar items as well as the contacts :(

Good new though! I've set up Thunderbird e-mail to do offline storage of calendars. This way I could export the calendar data as well as my contacts. Both stored in previous Baikal package.

I then downloaded latest Baikal source files 0.8.0 from github and extracted them to the web folder of my NAS. Added a virtual domain in web station and could set up Baikal from scratch, including setting up a new empty database.

Afterwards I've imported all calendar items back, so did I with the contacts. So far all is up again.
The contacts of my wife's PC is a different story and my be lost anyway. I will restore a local PC's backup and see if I can then export her contacts as well and perform the same steps as I did for my data.
