Our friends from Q have been asked to stop port forwarding

In my day, that was called a Sysop and no difference, it just means you are giving your self permissions, but NAS boxes can be multi-user, it all depends on the use case, but it's no different from a NAS sitting at home to a server in a data centre.
data in a public data center can be accessed by those whom administer the service(s)

As previously pointed out to you, there is no such thing as a public data centre, they are all owned by private companies. So it does not matter if the NAS is in your private home or a server is in a data centre, all that changes is you don't have to charge yourself a monthly fee for accessing your data on the NAS.

as pointed out to you, it is about whom has access to what...

And all I’m trying to do is lock down things so no one can get in and I have access when I need to!
I think I’m ok. At least I’ve been Ok so far…..

Though between this thread and a conversation with wife over expenses ‘for NAS’s’ this coming year… I’m beginning to sound like my old bosses at the Network!
