photos app-free up space?

I us the photos app on my android phone and have a question suggestion. There's a feature in the app titled, "free up space." I've been told that it removes the photos from the phones gallery. I was wondering if they can't make it work like Drive client works on a PC. You can set it to move all the files from the directory of the pc to the nas. Yet, the files are still visible and accessible from windows explorer. TIA
