I just noticed my PMS v1.32.8.7639 is alerting there's an update: it's to 1.40.0.7998. The release notes start:
  • (PLEASE NOTE) This version makes changes to the database which will make it compatible only with server versions 1.31.2 or higher (released March 14). You will not be able to use your database on Plex Media Server versions lower than this after this update. Please also be patient when updating to this version if you have a very large database and allow the upgrade process to finish.

Over at Plex.tv there's a forum thread asking how's it going on Synology and so far a couple have posted with playback problems. I thought it might be useful to capture any similar experiences here. [before I upgrade]

I have skipped this version even in beta (PlexPass access). I will skip a few more weeks before I upgrade and see that this new major change is under control. I don't want to mess about with a platform that is supposed to bring me peace and calm moments at the end of the day.

Big thanks to the heroes who will send their NAS units to the Plex front line. I salute you!

I have Plex server installed on my secondary NAS, it is the manual download from Plex (not the Syno package). Does anyone know if the manually installed version is "checked" for updates within DSM?

As far as I know, no. Why? The installed version is newer than the official version.

No idea, but then I suspect the situation has never arisen whereby the Package Center 'official' version is actually newer than a fairly recently* manual install.

*some months or a year.

Just checked on the Plex forum to see when 1.29.2.6364 was generally released... 8th Nov '22. So what's that... over 15 months ago?

I often use Plex app on my iMac to watch videos. There will be a 1 beside the dashboard icon, telling me there is an update to the installed version. Once I download it, it does require a manual install on the NAS though.

There are a lot little issues with 1.40.

While it is public release now, If you want to back down the the most-recent you have that’s stable then that’s OK too.

(Being stable and viable is better than bleeding edge)

Chuck@Plex posted. Looks like 1.40 should have been in the beta channel a bit longer. Sitting this one out.

I've a mind to update to 1.40 on the backup DS218+ since, other than directing Hyper Backup and some Active Backup to it, it can be a playground. At some point in the next few days. It would be useful to know what triggers the problems as I have a small selection of media to test.
