Hi to all from New Zealand ,

For some time I have been trying to install Plex Media Server on my DS218+

I have followed instructions for both the package already available and manual install.

Permissions always set correctly.

Running DSM 7.1.1-42962 Update 5

Every time, whatever method l use it installs correctly, but when I try to open it always takes me to what looks like the quick connect URL for the NAS , but whatever it is, does not go anywhere.

I would assume it should take me to my Plex page where l can set up my media.

Any help would be gratefully received

Cheers,
Dave

Hi itjasper,
Thank you for your reply

I don’t think l installed via Quickconnect , just to check, when you say Plex you are meaning the Plex Media Server package for NAS? I believe that the install l am doing is in the right place- on the NAS using the web interface.

Not quite sure what you mean by "using the IP address of the NAS”

Apologies if I am missing something obvious, still inexperienced with using NAS.

Cheers,
Dave

I think it’s picking up the domain name that you’ve configured elsewhere in Control Panel.

For now you can use http://NAS_LAN_IP:32400/web, or https. The address that is shown is a suggestion and the important bit is the ‘:32400/web’.
Hi,
Thank you for your reply.
Afraid l am not really following. Did l set up a Domain name , do I need to. The YouTube tutorials l follow all look straight forward but if does not work once set up.

I can't find where DSM picks up the server name it decides to display. For my main NAS it's www.mydomain.tld but my other NAS's have nas2name_from_local_dns.mydomain.tld and nas2name_from_local_dns. I thought it may be Hostname in Control Panel / External Access / Advanced, but none of these match what DSM thinks is the right name. Anyway, it doesn't matter you just have to be able to browse to the NAS on TCP port 32400. However you browse to DSM on the NAS now you just have to delete the everything to the right of the URL down to and including the colon ':', then paste :32400/web

Hi to everyone,
thank you for your replies. Yup … I believe I am still stumbling around in the dark LOL.

At first from reading what everyone has posted, I thought that I somehow needed to change the URL that is in the bottom right of my screenshot to the address of my current Plex server which is one of the machines on my home network.
Then I realised, why would I want to be connecting to my old Plex server when I am setting up a new Plex server on my Nas… I can hear Mr Spock saying; "most illogical"
I also thought that it should go to my Plex account URL?

So, if I understand correctly, I need the correct IP address and everybody has shown me how to find it.
I do not understand how to change from where the Nas Plex server is being directed to the correct IP address.

I appreciate your patience
Cheers
Dave

No and neither do I on my NAS. It’s not actually the Plex server getting it wrong it’s Package Center guessing it wrong.

You need to connect to the new Plex server and claim it to have it added to your Plex account. You’ll then have access to both old Mac and new NAS Plex servers from your account, provided they are accessible from where you are connecting from.

Open a web browser and in the Address Bar of the browser enter http://<IP address of NAS>:32400/web/ then press enter, where <IP address of NAS> above is replaced by the IP address of the NAS. You can get this as per @SkipWhiffle 's post #9 above.

The address you use should look something like http://192.168.1.47:32400/web/. Your numbers will be different.

Do this in future to access your Plex server rather than by clicking 'Open' in the Synology package centre. The latter may or may not work (as you've discovered), but its not a usual way to open & configure a Plex server. Just bookmark the address above once you're in and use it for future configuration etc.

Hey Fortran,

Thanks for your reply

Really helpful as l had not realized l could access my NAS from its own address.
Definitely thought l was on to a winner -
Got IP address of NAS using Synology Assistant (very handy)
And thus armed then went to browser with the correct URL:

No, no, no! Received an error message, (see first screenshot)
Noticed also that the URL had lost the http prefix (see second screenshot)
Checked and rechecked the theoretically correct URL. It looks correct.

Any thoughts from anyone ?

2 Qs:
Can you access any other services, shared files & folders etc on the NAS in question from the machine you tried the above with?
What is the IP address of the machine you tried connecting on? (If on a Mac: System Settings, Network, click on active connection, Details button, IP address is shown)

The 'Can't connect' message suggests either a Network problem (my guess) or that the Plex server is not configured correctly on the NAS. The above is some rudimentary testing for a Network problem.

Edit: Ignore Safari not showing the 'http://' prefix...it's there if you typed it, it's just Safari being 'helpful' by not showing it...

Hi Fortran,

No problem connecting to the NAS in totality both using a browser or through the Mac's Finder.

The IP address of Mac is 192.168.178.87

Mac IP address looks fine.
When you say you can connect to the NAS both through a browser or the Mac Finder, are you doing this using the local IP of the NAS (eg 192.168.178.89) or the Quickconnect address (something like mynas.us2.quickconnect.to)?
If you put https://192.168.178.89:5001 into Safari do you get to your DSM login page?

This is basic, but just trying to be sure that the local network is indeed up & running...

Hi Fortran,
Had been using the Quickconnect, but just tried using the local IP of the NAS using https://192.168.178.89:5001 (side question: why https and the :5001suffix?)

Both work perfectly and go to DSM Login.

The https is because it's a secure http connection; the :5001 denotes which port to connect to. DSM by default runs at the IP address of your NAS, on port 5001.

Ok this has confirmed that your network (LAN) is up and running. I'm presuming you're not running a firewall that is set to be blocking any ports on your LAN? If you dont know what this means / not sure, you probably aren't running one. And I'm presuming you're not trying to do all this via a VPN, which could also make life difficult.

Hi Fortran,

The bolded part above is what @itsjasper was referring to in post #2.

Try re-running the Plex installation when you are logged into the NAS using the local IP https://192.168.178.89:5001 in your browser, not Quickconnect. The latter is really intended to give you access to the NAS when you are not in your LAN. When in your LAN, use the local IP address of the NAS 192.168.178.89 when making connections via browser or Finder.
