Possible to connect to DSM/NAS "desktop" environment without a web browser?

I can't find any info on this from an online search as I just keep getting un-related results: Is it possible to connect to the DSM "desktop" via VPN (for instance) or some client like that rather than having to do it through a web browser? To be clear, I mean the gui as I'm aware that I can access with a terminal via ssh (but can't do X forwarding in that case either).

This looks promising, for Apple users. Would like to see this on Android, too.

just to be sure:
- this is 3rd party app
- you need to put your domain/IP + usr/psw from the NAS into the app
- never use an administrator group account for such purpose
for more paranoid people, don’t share your usr/psw and ‘path’ to your NAS with 3rd parties

This really useful iOS app only allows you to access system info, logs, drive statistics and such things. I don't see any way to access disc content or even the control panel, which I think is maybe what you are trying to do.

What are you trying to do?
Would something like DS Manager Pro do it for you?
Mostly installing software, dealing with things like installing stuff through docker, managing files, setting up user accounts, etc. I'm in an early stage with my NAS so I have a lot of stuff that needs to be sorted and setup right now. I don't think I'll need to access it directly as much in the near future, but it sure is a pain now having to have yet another browser open... add to that all of the other services and apps I need to regularly use that are web based and it gets really annoying to have a bunch of browser instances and/or tabs open and having to wonder which one of them froze the browser ;)

Thanks for that suggestion, but unfortunately it doesn't tick enough boxes for me to be able to ditch the web interface.
