This question has probably been asked before, but I didn't see anything that gave me the answers I was looking for out. I am setting up my NAS, and the following is what I am trying to accomplish. I would like to be able to have access to my NAS when I am away from home using my Laptop, my cell phone, and my ipad. I want to be able to have access to my photos from Synology Photos, my Plex Videos, and music from away from home. Using Synology photos, if I share a link, for example, vacation photos, I would like friends and family to have access to the pictures. I was wondering if I use OpenVPN will family & friends still have access if I give them a invite to a link?

Which model do you have? If you can spin up a docker container I'd recommend going with Wireguard over any other option. You can share the connection setup via a QR code so anyone you want to can have access.

If you setup any type of vpn you will get access to all services on the nas but, generating any invite links to share will provide you with a local ip address of your NAS. This means that anyone outside that household will be able to get to that content.

You either have to set up vpn on all their devices, or push your content over the internet somehow (quick connect, ddns, reverse proxy on top or it etc).

In terms of vpn, Wireguard get my voice as well

So its Docker-supported NAS. With that you have more VPN option as mentioned before.
