Hi,

I currently have a DS920+, with 2x6TB WD Red (Plus), and 1x12TB Red Plus. I intend to add a new drive 12TB or larger, and in a few months will retire one 6TB to an old desktop. So, could have room for another.

Question is WHICH NAS drive larger than 12TB is quietest?!

My older 6TB Red Plus are definitely quieter than the 12TB as they're 5400 vs. 7200, but the 12TB Red Plus is still quiet enough. I know Red Plus is known to be one of the quieter 7200 NAS drives, but they don't make anything larger than 14TB, and Red Pro seems much loud. In Seagate world, on "specs" Ironwolf Pro seems QUIETER than Ironwolf while reviews seem to indicate both are louder than Red Plus.

So, which of these are loudest?!

1. 12TB Red Plus
2. 16TB+ Red Pro
3. 16TB+ Ironwolf
4. 16TB+ Ironwolf Pro
5. 16TB+ Exos

Exos is the best value, but I assume that's loudest... right?

I can't help on the larger sizes. I have used 3 and 4 TB old WD Red (equivalent to the newer Red Plus) in 2-bay NAS. The 8 TB Ironwolf are significantly whir-ier and clack-ier, in the 5-bay NAS. I've tried the velco trick to make the drive trays a tighter fit, to no effect. It could be the 5-bay leaks more sounds (there is no front cover unlike the non-DS7xx+ 2-bays). Couple that with the drives are noisier.

What I would check before the noise is the rate for Non-Recoverable Read Errors / Non-Recoverable Errors Per Bit Read. Do a search for Unrecoverable Read Error (URE) and you'll see articles about RAID 5 (so I'd include SHR-1), especially when using larger drives. In summary, look for drives with rates of 1 per 10^15 rather than 1 per 10^14. The articles you find will explain the maths. It's mitigating risk and things may not happen but I was happy to see my Ironwolf 8 TB where 10^15.

As for noise, place the NAS somewhere that is away from where quiet is mandatory. For me, I have varying levels of tinnitus so having the NAS on the end of my desk in the home office provides some welcome random background noise. Using isolating foam under the NAS feet helps from amplifying the noise. If you also have a very loud internal monologue / poor sense of surrounding sounds then that's a bonus :)
