Hi again!

I would like to upgrade the Synology RS1219+ of the small company I'm working for.
Until now it was serving only as a storage server for 4 people. But I'm starting to use resource intensive applications such as Active Backup for Google Workspace.

Regarding RAM, while we're at it, I will upgrade to 2x8GB=16GB. The Synology products compatibility list shows only a Synology kit (RAM1600DDR3L-8GBx2), which is hard to find in France and costs around 300 euros. I know from experience with my DS716+II, DS218+ or DS920+ that at least some Synology models support third party RAM. Can you confirm that I can use third party SO-DIMM DDR3L 1600MHz modules with the RS1219+? Such as Corsair Value Select, Crucial or Kingston?

Regarding SSDs, the compatibility list only lists older models. May I use newer Crucial or Samsung M.2 NVMe SSDs? Which capacity are you suggesting? I want to optimize operations such as backups and VMware storage. With an older model such as the RS1219+, will I be able to use them as shares, or only as caches?

Thank you! :)

The link does not confirm nor infirm that the RS1219+ supports third party memory, what I retain is that you should just stick to the same specs as the OEM modules in terms of frequency and ranking. Thank you for it.

So I've ordered a pair of Crucial 8GB DDR3L-1600 SODIMM (reference CT102464BF160B), I will report back.

Regarding SSDs, I had forgotten that we already had a 10GbE card, which we will keep for now. I may reconsider when SMB multichannel will be available, as I will be able to get both 300MB/s with 4x1Gb/s and faster IOPS with SSDs.

What is the sweet spot, in terms of cache capacity, for applications such as Active Backup for Business?

There really isn't a blanket answer for that. It depends on your mix of large and small files, their types, access frequency, access mix (groups, singles hither and yon, etc.) etc.

So, if one is using SHR, the SSD cache info in the KB does not apply? 🤷🏻‍♂️
