So I bit the bullet and ordered the DS1621+ to upgrade from my older DS916+ ... the NAS comes with only 4g RAM (shame on Synology) ... adding another 8g ECC module is over $200 US. Does anyone have source to look at compatible memory that would be less expensive?

thanks ... Stephen

@Telos
I think the RAM 'vendor moan' is on more recent units and only time will tell if it becomes a vendor lock.

I run 16GB of Crucial in my DS1517+ and like you, no sign of a RAM vendor warning.

To add to the conversation and provide my experience, I purchased two of the Kingston KSM26SED8/16HD modules and received a memory warning on reboot running DSM version DSM 6.2.3-25426 Update 3 with my DS1621+. I have not experienced any noticeable problems in my case. Everything has been rock solid and operating as expected. I hope Synology will rescind this annoying practice of trying to force people to buy their branded components. All of my memory specs match those of the "official" 16GB RAM sticks that they sell.

Additional notes: I also added two Samsung 970 Evo Plus 500GB SSD's for caching, and a Intel E10G42BTDA X520-DA2 LP FH Dual SFP+ NIC Card... Everything is performing as expected and no issues.

I'd look into it with more care as the 1621xs+ is a very different model - Intel rather than AMD; a Xeon D cpu so the memory speed requirements are lower. Maximum memory (unofficial) is probably higher. Plus the usual Xeon specifics (eg no SHR) for the system itself.

From personal experience, having Plex running with HDD+nvme cache has proven to be much faster than without a cache volume and also about the same while running it on a pure SSD volume as well.
Could you qualify that a bit? I just set up a DE1621+ and everything on Plex feels instant already. At shat point do you thick the cache matters? Do you have to have a ton of users or huge library to see a difference?

Bit of an old thread… I’m looking to buy and thinking of non-ECC. Anyone?

Depending on the drives (HDDs) and the NAS itself, plus all the services that you might be running on that NAS will make a difference as well. Your NAS is very strong and capable and if Plex is the only "massive" app that you have running then sure, you will not maybe see the benefits of the cache.

The most benefits one would see on your plex clients and listing the library. If you are running below let's say 1k items, then really there is no point in running a cache on it. But more than that with multiple heavy apps/services on the NAS alongside Plex, the cache will help to maintain that nice flow and listing of your libraries.

Also, yes, if you have multiple concurrent users browsing as well it will have an impact that cache will handle better as the metadata will be cached and present much quicker than without the active cache.

So, it will depend on your setup both HW and SW.

So to be fair, all but the heaviest of users are unlikely to see any benefit from the cache. That’s consistent with most of the reviews on Reddit, you’re actually the first positive review I’ve seen. I’m hoping the DSM7 improvements will make the cache more useful in the future.

If you think about having the NVMe slot as a volume slot instead of just a cache slot, that will not happen. Synology has confirmed that they will not use those slots for anything else apart from the cache. Also, DSM7 will bring some batter handling on the caching front but apart from that, I wouldn't hold my breath.

@jono That is great news if it holds out - regrettably the warning may not appear for a while though even when it is deemed 'incompatible'.

The syno_mem_check runs at boot/init and seems to miss the check more often than not. Even on my 12221+ with Synology RAM I can see these messages logged when the check does not run:

2021-02-09T18:19:26+00:00 Rivendell syno_mem_check: memory/memory_compatibility_get.c:130 Failed to get manufacturer array 2021-02-09T18:19:26+00:00 Rivendell syno_mem_check: syno_mem_check.c:59 Failed to get memory layout: -1

If that happens with or without "Synology" RAM installed then the warning will not be logged or logged & displayed.

If the syno_mem_check runs and finds an invalid manufacturer code you would expect to see a message logged in /var/log/messages to the effect of:

2021-02–19T13:01:41+00:00 Rivendell syno_mem_check: syno_mem_check.c:64 Illegal memory layout: 64

Note that if you uncheck the Memory Configuration Warning in DSM Control Panel -> Notification -> Advanced the warnings will not be displayed either but they will still be logged in /var/log/messages.

Did you happen to run sudo dmidecode -t memory after you installed the memory?

Regards.

I spoke too soon, I saw the message this morning 😅

It's not very intrusive though, so I really don't mind. And pretty poor that this can happen even with genuine Synology RAM. It makes me feel even better that I bought this RAM.

Not sure if I was clear but to confirm:

- The failure to run the mem check with either Synology or other RAM fitted = no warning logged.
- A mem check run without 'Synology' ram = warning message logged.

As to what Synology will do during a warranty claim with one or more mem check warnings saved to /var/log/messages remains to be seen.

It is a pain that we have to put-up with such nonsense I do wonder if we will see a 'failure to boot' introduced with a future DSM version. At the moment the mem check almost feels like an experiment.

Ah, right.

If they were to start enforcing that then it might push me to make my unRAID machine my main one.

Indeed but for those who are comfortable enough with unraid and alike are more than capable of commenting out the mem check and of cleansing the logs. Of course, as you say, the closer Synology brings the management and upgrade faff to that of a roll-your-own NAS the more they will loose the pro-sumer market to it.
