In my DS918+ I've got 2x6TB (=volume 1, almost full), 1x1TB SSD (volume 2) and 1x3TB (=volume 3). What I'd like to do is append my 3TB disk to volume 1 (So I get 9TB of space instead of 6TB). Of course, this is not possible, unless I recreate the entire thing and starts building the SHR with the 3TB disk.
Anyone knows any good ways to do this with minimum effort? I guess in theory I could backup entire volume 1 and recreate it, but.. Well, perhaps that' s the only way of doing it, but still.. Ideas wanted.. :)

You pretty much nailed it. Not many options if the 2x6TB is almost full.

Rather than go through those drive gymnastics, replace the 3TB with a new 6TB drive. Yea, it costs a bit more, but it doubles your volume1 capacity and offers better "future-proofing" before you end up swapping the 3TB drive for a 6TB down the road.

I think @Telos covered it there. It's the old saying 'time is money' and what's your time worth? Either backup everything and recreate the RAID or buy a new 6TB and switch out the 3TB. Even the new disk approach needs you to backup the 3TB, then a long-ish wait while parity checks complete to add the new disk*, and finally restore the 3TB's data.

So even the easy way will take quite a long time, but you probably will get an even longer rebuild starting from scratch.

*I added a third 8TB disk to my 2x8TB SHR and it took 41 hours to complete, even with Storage Pool -> Configurations set to faster resync.
