Repair degraded Storage Pool with dead SSD using an HDD

Hi

So long story short: I have a DS920+ with 4 SSDs in. All of them are 1.92TB. I am using SHR.

One of the SSD died for the 3rd time so I will replace it.

I don't have another SSD right now but I have a 16TB HDD. Can I use it to repair the Storage Pool and then remove/deactivate it so it does not create any problems with the other 3 SSDs?

I know I should not mix SSDs and HDDs.

Or is it possible to keep it in the NAS and simply deactivate it?

Just curious- how it was happened:

because if the disk really died, then use of the “repaired” drive in RAID is call for troubles.

Sadly this is not possible. We need to work and acess files.

BTW the SSD died the day I received it. After 18 hours in the NAS degraded itself.

Synology suggested me to swap it with another drive to see if it was the SSD or the NAS bay. Now the SSD died again so it's for sue the disk. I suppose.

Well looks like it is the drive in the end m8.

You only have few options here. Get a new one and repair the array or delete it and use the new array with 3 drives and a pans later on.

In any case make a backup of the data running on that array before you do anything, and especially if you will continue to run in degraded mode for some time.

Stupid question: now the storage pool is repaired. What happen if I deactivate the HDD I just insert? The pool will be degraded again?

What can physically happen if I leave the HDD running together with SSDs? Hardware fails?

You could have array problems in your case. You are using 2 separate drive methods and in shr no less so best to avoid it.

I see. I'm currently connect to the Syno via OpenVPN from home. I would like to delete the volume and the storage pool in order to create a new one and use just the 3 working SSDs.

I have a backup on of my data on an External Drive attached to the Syno via USB. I can see it in DSM. When I delete the volume in remote, I will lose the VPN server package right? Do I still maintain connection to the NAS using OpenVPN?

It would be advised to do this locally but it can be done remotely via quick connect or ddns. Vpn package will indeed have a problem as any other package on that volume.

Mmhhh okay. If after deleting the volume the Syno does not need to be restarted I could try via QuickConnect

BTW is that normal that after I repaired the Storage Pool with an HDD of 16TB the Volume still shows 5TB?

Should be ok but the thing I hope won’t be a problem is the fact that you are running with shr setup. Expanding that type of an array will be possible now only with 16TB or larger drive. Hope this will not apply to your substitute scenario as well, but I guess you will see when the time comes.

I will run SSDs and HDD till the new SSD will come. The new SSD will be exactly the same as the one that broke, 1.92TB.

The only solution, when the new SSD arrives, I think is Backup data, delete Storage, Volume and start fresh

In case you get “blocked” by shr limitations yea, otherwise it will be just fine. Degrade the volume and put the new one in.
