in 2019, I replaced a spinning HD for SSD. in laptop (SanDisk Ultra II 940GB)

Yesterday it had trouble booting, but did finally boot after couple restarts.
Ran the Software SanDisk/Now WD provided, and it reports SSD has 97% of life remaining. I have never seen but 100%!

Put Seagate 1TB SSD in 2nd drive slot and cloned boot drive to it, then swapped. Laptop boots fine, actuaally: slightly faster. SeaTools says ‘passed’.

I know SSD’s have ram set aside to swap when/if ram area fails. In this case why a 1TB SSD is only 940GB (Before use).
My Question: HOW LONG DO YOU WAIT WHEN A SSD REPORTS LESS THAN 100% OF LIFE REMAINING?

Never saw a SSD Not report 100% before

First issue ever with SSD

Edit: day 2... More tests to confirm OK... All SeaTools tests pass... With another SanDisk Ultra II in second drive slot as data drive, ran AJA R/W tests... Confimed.. Seagate Barracuda 120 SSD: IS FASTER R/W than SanDisk Ultra II...

Once you format, NO drive is going to give you 100% of the "Marketed" size.

HOW LONG DO YOU WAIT WHEN A SSD REPORTS LESS THAN 100% OF LIFE REMAINING?
That would depend on your "usage". You have put 3% wear & tear on your SanDisk SSD drive in 4 YEARS.

Agree (Size) Sandisk sells 1TB as 940GB...
Support says rest is drive OS, and Ram swap area -- for when ram dies...
I have many of same type.... on 2x video editing systems.... Both as SE (Cache & Cache Database for video edit) and, 4 as 2x Raid0 for video editing.... All have been significantly beat upon, in past 5 years.... All still report 100%... ?? So maybe SanDisk Life Remaining is based upon Ram Swap? New SSD Night and Day difference on boot, normal operation.... Same code and hardware... ????

My first SSD to indicate issues..... How have you folks determined when to replace SSD?

Agree (Size after format)....
SanDisk sold 1TB as 940GB... Support says remainder is Drive OS, and Swap space for when RAM Dies.....
I have many of same model SSD (Ultra II)... Used on 2x Video Editing systems, as SE (Cache & Cache Database) and 2x Raid0's, all of which have been Significantly beat upon in past 5 years..... Just checked again... All report 100% life remaining!

Wondering if the Life Remaining is based upon Ram Swap, and not useage????

This was my first SSD Swapout.... Wondering... What is your history of SSD Repacements?

checked the forums.. These drives do not fully support "Smart" reporting... so, yes, it could be something unique to them..
I sure as heck am getting my money's worth on them!

Sandisk sells 1TB as 940GB...
You should know this... It is common across all drives, PC. phone, NAS, Server, Enterprise storage... Gaze at Storage Manager in your NAS.

The box capacity is in different units than how the OS/hardware reports. This is not a Sandisk issue.

Iirc, the "life Remaining' stat is usually calculated from the “Average Block Erase Count” SMART attribute 173, where this count is expressed as a percentage of the max erase cycles supported by the drive.

So, your 97% remaining means you have used approx 3% of your average block erase cycles. IOW, the drive is nowhere near its expected EOL.

Was the problematic SSD trimmed regularly? If it has never been trimmed, this could account for slow i/o performance.

No way the other drives are showing no use after 5 years. Especially drives & raids on main edit system! Checked and all drives doing same speeds on edit system as documented years ago.
Did not document laptop boot drive. But it’s 80+% of new Seagate
Trim: I was not manually doing it. It resides in a safe, now, as a system dated 12-8-23

I only checked dashboard every 2-3 months, and doesn’t make sense that this drive would go from 100% to 97% in 2-3 months, and be 100% before that for 4-5 years?? But laptop worked all day today with no hiccoughs, with same code, hardware (crept SSD) but I kept it anyhow.

After reading posts here and elsewhere.... Checked all SSD's yet again....
All are 4-5 years old.... Other than the Laptop boot that suddenly went from 100-97%, All others, still report 100%
On SSD's on edit systems, where I had documented R/W speeds, they are still the same... via Generic or Video Rate Based speed tests (that are sensitive to dropped frames for video editing)..
The Removed 97% laptop drive now resides in Safe as a complete 4 partition clone... Nothing unusual since on Laptop...
So I either fixed a SSD that just started failing, or, breathed new life into old i7 Laptop, with New SSD... Along with storing a 12/8/2023 clone of boot drive & it's 4 Partitions.... Or both! Either way: Win.

Good idea regarding proof of purchase. Thanks for that. But it does create an uncomfortable situation...
