Restoring Data & reassigning home folder?

I backed up the data from my DS920+ using HyperBackup. Besides files and folders, I also backed up all the apps. Although the shared folders were encrypted, they were mounted during the backup.

After the backup was completed, I verified that I could open it and view the data using the Windows HyperBackup Explorer.

Next, I set up another DS920+ and restored the data. I selected the 'homes' folder (which includes the home directories of two users) and the Synology Photos app for restoration. The restore process completed successfully, and the relevant home folders were visible.

However, my problem is figuring out how to assign these restored home folders to newly created users on the new NAS. While I could copy and paste the data from one folder to another, I am looking for a faster method.

Additionally, regarding Synology Photos, if both users had separate photos and albums, how can I assign these to the new users?I already tried creating accounts with the exact same usernames as before, but it doesn't seem to work as expected.

Have you backed up the actual users in the process? The Update and Restore function in the Control Panel offers backup and restore of the DSM configuration. That will also include the users. You want to restore those exact users' backups and configuration so that it recreates the users on the destination NAS. Then restore the actual content of the /homes folder.

Well...

I experimented with encryption on an existing shared home folder, which unfortunately disrupted my configuration. I'm not sure why, but my NAS started malfunctioning.

I decided to restore a backup file from a day ago (which didn't include user data).

I've managed to transfer all the data, but my main concern now is with the photos. I had two users, each with their own photos. For user 1, I moved the photos folder from the restored home folder to the new user's home folder. When I signed in with the new user into the photos app, the albums appeared, but the photos aren't displayed yet. I hope it's because indexing is still in progress.

For user 2, the same approach didn’t work. Even though I moved the photos folder to the new user's home folder and confirmed the images are there through file explorer, nothing shows up in the photos app. I don't think it's a matter of indexing. At this point, it's a waiting game unless someone has any suggestions.

Hey just an update. The images loaded in the photos app and so did the albums but the actual photos in the albums where not visible. Im assuming since they where created by another user

Albums are "virtual" in Synology Photos. If you have access to the actual photos and those are presented, that would mean that permissions are not the issue. Why albums are not linking and presenting those same files I have no idea, but if you can test out with making a new album and add some photos. Considering the whole platform depends on records inside Photos database, it could be a simple matter of "new user account" vs the original user account. Because the original account was not restored you might end up just redoing the albums again now that you have access to the actual photos.

Good to hear. You could also clone the drive and expand the data partition using Clonezilla/gParted.
