Well who the hell buys a rack NAS with realtek CPU? Entry or not, RS should not be this close to DS218 model. On top of that they even managed to move HW transcode feature that DS218 does support...

I suppose if you just want a file server and back-up repository. Oh and happen to own a rack!

It does seem a bit limp though, kind of limits the scope for meddling! :D

To try and be kind to the RS819, surely it depends what purpose it will be used for? For a small business that needs a rackable server for file services and backups, wouldn't it do that ok*. It's also expandable at a later date. The rest of the DSM suite of packages would mostly be too much, especially the new Drive/Office/Moments.

There are plenty of people that a homebrew server would be too daunting whereas Synology delivers system and package patches and making installing them straight-forward (assuming Package Center isn't unavailable).

*just saw @Tedster said pretty much the same thing.

Indeed, but still putting that RLT cpu in there and then gimping it more just makes no sense. Sure there is a demand for a rack model NAS that doesn't cost an arm and a leg but still an entry Atom would be better than this.

It's good to keep in mind that Synology models are designed and engineered for a global market.
This is likely a more popular solution in Asian markets and various small-business focused markets as fredbert mentioned.
While it may seem underpowered to any power-user, it's a cost-efficient solution for simple backups in a small form factor rack-mount NAS. (If you're taking the value of the DSM environment into account)
They've even found enough efficiency in DSM to enable BTRFS capabilities on a few value series units such as this one. (previously only found in Intel-based plus and above models)
Just as the FlashStations don't make much sense for the vast majority of power-users, this is simply a device that is made for a specific demographic.
It's hard to fault Synology for providing a reasonable range of capability and pricing in their units. This unit is $600 USD when you already had the option of going up to the Atom-based $850+ Plus options (RS818+/RP+) or even the Xeon-based $2k 4-bay (RS1619xs+).
