Dears,

What are the available tools for management of screen time and internet access via home networks ? I am facing challenges (euphemism for headache :cautious:) , to enable timed access to the internet by my family members. Can you share your experiences with me ?

User devices are a windoze 10 desktop, an ios mobile and a playstation 4.

Besides parenting and dialogue, are there any useful tools you have used and found useful ?

Synology routers and SRM have this built in as part of their "Safe Access" package. Just as an idea.

I have my ISP router, which I log in each time to modify parental control time restrictions. The only Synology is the NAS machine :)

When I used Apple's Airport routers then timed wireless access could be done per MAC address, this was basically a cut-off of all LAN access. The downside was when the kids were getting older and this caused them to drop to mobile data... they learnt to stop this as they used up their monthly allowance very quickly. This MAC address time-blocking seems to be pretty ubiquitous among routers nowadays.

With Mac it used to have Parental Control but I think this is now moved into Screen Time, for controlling standard accounts on the Mac. Not sure about Windows, only every had for business use or fleeting as the kids grew up and do their own things.

In SRM routers the Safe Access has time based controls for Internet access, and is contained in profiles (web filters, timed access, safe search) ... to which devices are added (by MAC address) or the default 'group' for unassigned devices. The big difference to Airport's approach is that Safe Access is applied to wired and wireless devices, and doesn't block the device from the connecting to the LAN. So devices could still access the NAS, network printer, etc. but not access Internet services.

You can use 'reward' in Safe Access (in DS router app) to add one-time extra time to a profile and all devices in there will get more time. I had a profile for my youngest's devices and would get asked, often by text message, for extra time. It's odd how homework was done later and games played when they got home. The best thing is not to make a war over it because you will only succeed in creating a hacker. When much younger the rule was 'no devices upstairs at bedtime'.

I'm sure there are similar features on other routers. You have the choice of either: management of every device with local features; centrally on a gateway device than must be used to gain access to whatever services.
