Working on a new deployment and contrary to our SOP so far, which consisted in using on premise AD, we are thinking of using the
Synology Directory Server.

Is it “good enough” for typical SME network (say 20 Windows users, 2-3 groups with different right assignment, potential Azure AD sync (not AADS)) ?

Any comment / feedback most appreciated !

It will be, but still best to run a POC for it and see 1st hand.

I know some other shops that do this. Use Syn Nas as the ADDS and file sharing. I think I'm going to try this with a new smaller client that I just picked up.
