Securing nas traffic with VPN

Hi,
I have read a few posts on this but have not found an answer.

What I would like to do is to secure the nas traffic with a vpn. I am using Nordvpn.
The challenge is that Nord does not provide port forwarding, which is essential for remote access.
I have tried putting the vpn client on the nas and on a dd-wrt router, however, no joy on either case.

So, questions:

1. While I use reverse proxy, I still have 2 ports open. Is there a way to avoid depending on port forwarding at all?
2. Is there a way through route configurations to make nas on vpn client accessible?

Thanks

I use Tailscale and it works really well. Tailscale is a mesh VPN that allows all your devices to be on the same “local” network so you would be able to access your NAS wherever you are as long as the device you are using is on your Tailscale network.

Thanks for your response.
So, will this work with my ddns addresses?
The reason I ask is because while I could install Tailscale app (if there is one) on my phone to be on the same Lan, I use Emby for video streaming and there are TVs outside my Lan that use an address to connect to the server.
Thanks
