Part of my decision to upgrade the HD size when I bought my DS224+ was my intention to use it to record security cam footage to. I am now in the process of finalizing what I'll buy in terms of cams, but I am concerned about the potential security issue of someone hacking that side of the system and gaining access to my home network. Currently, I use the NAS as the SOHO server as I spend 2 weeks out of 4 away and it's wonderful to be able to remotely access my data. So, I cannot afford a security hole from another source (for example, a security cam).

Am I concerned over nothing, and if so, how does Security Station stop this sort of hacker getting into my network, or are there things I have to do to block access?

Can you share a bit about the whole setup from a networks standpoint? What software are you using? Cameras, etc?

I’ve bought HiKvision 1920x1080 cams being dumped due to software back door.
I’ve also bought 2x 4K cams from 2x MFG’s from Ali Express. Where possible I update firmware to avoid issues. On 4x Ali Express cams no updates. So:
Put them all behind a router with firewall rules isolating them from internet. Went so far as to enter bogus Gateway IP’s in each of them😎!
I do Not port forward or open any ports anywhere.
I changed the default 3 strikes rule to 2 strikes. Changed default router & NAS ports to oddball ones.
Using Surveillance Station on multiple Synology NAS’s. I use QC via DS CAM To see live images, or recordings, Worldwide. SS to save videos, ftp to save still images from cameras. All motion detected. Both video (SS:story in itself) and still pics, All videos saved on 3x NAS’s, ftp to one, then each shares with other two. I also allow view only access to multiple people: HOA owners to live view 3 of the 12 cameras.
Started this with 1920x1080 cams 7 or so years ago. 4K cameras for going on 2 years.
So far so good. No issues I’ve seen in 7+ years!
