Hi everyone,

I’m planning to reorganise the drives in my Synology DS1823xs+. Currently, I have 4 x 8TB Seagate IronWolf drives installed in bays 1, 2, 3, and 4. I want to shut down my NAS, and then shift these drives to bays 3, 4, 5, and 6. Additionally, I’m considering adding two new 8TB Synology Drive Plus disks into bays 1 and 2, and add them to the RAID array.

Before I proceed, I want to ensure this won’t cause any issues with my existing RAID configuration or data integrity. Here are my specific questions:
  • Can I shift the Seagate drives to new bays without any data loss or reconfiguration issues?
  • Are there any precautions I should take when adding new drives to the first two bays while the NAS is operational?
  • Will the Synology DSM then allow me to add these two new drives on bay 1 and 2 to the RAID array?
Thanks in advance for your advice!

  • Yes, if powered off
  • No
  • Yes
That said, why reposition the drives. Just add the new drives to the empty bays and expand the pool/volume.

Thanks, @Telos, for the clarification. I’m considering putting the two brand new drives in bays 1 and 2 because I’ve heard that bay 1 tends to be the busiest. My thought is to ease the workload on the aging drives by placing the new ones in these positions.

Really ? I guess this is an assumption or do you have a link to check this.

I'm also unsure, therefore I am posting it here to seek further clarification.
