Should I buy a Synology NAS

do I buy 2 WD reds or 2 Ironwolf's
I would buy IronWolf drives.

I lost all trust for WD after they got caught lying about their drive speed and then when they changed their smaller size WD Red drives from CMR drive to SMR (Shingled Magnetic Recording) without telling anyone. The result of the SMR deception was WD changing the name from WD Red to WD Red Plus and stating which drives were SMR. Now all WD Red Plus drives are CMR and the drive speeds in the specs are real... but with their track record I wouldn't be surprised if there's another scandal in future.

FYI 10TB WD Red drives are loud. The larger and smaller sizes are quiet.

Thanks for the advice.

i'm only thinking of 2 x 4TB...maybe 2x 6TB.
My existing wd 2x4TB's are quiet as far as I am concerned.

If your existing wd’s are still good, you could try throwing one into the synology to see if you get the compatibility warning. If no warning just use them.

Going forward though I’d recommend IronWolf for the same reason @007revad mentioned. When WD pulled those shenanigans, that left a bitter taste in my mouth.
